The root of all superstition is that men observe when a thing hits, but not when it misses.

Once the human mind has favoured certain views, it pulls everything else into agreement with and support for them. Thus it happens that human knowledge, as we have it, is a mere medley and ill-digested mass, made up of much credulity and much accident, and also of the childish notions which we at first imbibed.
We represent300 also all multiplications301 of light, which we carry to great distance, and make so sharp as to discern small points and lines; also all colorations of light:.
