When you are tempted to act against your long-term interests, frame the choice as giving up the best possible long-term reward for whatever the immediate gratification is.

And yet even when the stress we’re under doesn’t seem inherently meaningful, it can trigger the desire to find meaning – if not in this moment, then in the broader context of our lives.
