Maybe the meaning was in how we heard the sound, but did nothing about it until it was so loud we had no choice.
When you feel terrible because someone has gotten something you want, you force yourself to remember how very much you have been given. You remember that there is plenty for all of us. You remember that someone else’s success has absolutely no bearing on your own.

As I stood there gazing at Elk Lake, it occurred to me for the first time that growing up poor had come in handy. She knows because you can’t fake love and generosity of spirit. It’s either there or it isn’t.
