Experimental science is fascinating, but I don’t want to do it. I want other people to do it, and I’ll read about it.
To fight against a war or, better yet, an entire “war machine,” we had to become warriors ourselves. This is the cunning symmetry of war: Enemies tend to come to resemble one another. There are no secret economies that nourish the poor; on the contrary, there are a host of special costs.
