Faith is a kind of knowing; it is different from hope. My faith is that life is purposeful; of that I’m sure. There is a God, there is intelligence, there is consciousness. And behind all of this, there is incredible compassion.
Whatever meaning ‘Annie’s Song’ had for me on a personal level, there was also a larger context. It could just as easily have been about love for a brother. Or a father. Or a friend. It could just as easily have been a prayer.
I was never trying to write a hit. I was just trying to write good songs and get a message out, and it was my great good fortune to be popular.
I think more about the family now. That’s an interesting progression for me.
