I’m not sure what is worse, a closed mind or a closed book.
If you are mesmerized by televised stupidity, and don’t get to hear or read stories about your world, you can be fooled into thinking that the world isn’t miraculous – and it is.
If we neglect Scripture in order to read only other books, we not only cut ourselves from the divine umbilical cord that feeds our souls, we also cut ourselves from the truth that makes it possible for us to benefit from the truth, goodness, and beauty in the books that we read.
In our land of opportunities and distractions, it’s hard to devote our attention to the quiet pleasures of reading. It’s as if we live our lives in a noisy restaurant and can’t have the intimate conversation we most yearn for.

Shelves full of books are all around me. Opening the different volumes I take a look, and find the pages covered with writings in unknown scripts – tadpole traces, bird feet markings, twisted branches. And in my dream I am able to read them all, to make sense of everything despite its difficulty.
The flickering candlelight conspired with the silence, and we only interrupted each other’s reading to share a casual delight.
What’s the use trying to read Shakespeare, especially in one of those little paper editions whose pages get ruffled, or stuck together with sea-water?
Well-wrought poems and works of imaginative literature can do for us what stone-cold prose can never do. They can help us grasp the full dimension of ways of life other than our own.
